Refers to the earliest phase of Minoan art and culture, according to the classification system devised by the archaeologist, Nikolas Platon. It is characterized by a society on Crete divided into a series of small units, politically and economically independent, with great regional variation, though sharing certain common cultural traits. It overlaps with the Early Minoan period.
