Carlos Pérez-Herce, por el cariño que desprenden las bonitas palabras que podemos leer en la dedicatoria, pensó que se trataba de una persona cercana al pintor. Concretamente, trabajó en el cuidado y mantenimiento de la casa y de la familia, es decir, una especie de ama de llaves de la época. Ignacio Pinazo nos muestra un estudio psicológico muy interesante a través de este retrato. Se puede apreciar el carácter y forma de ser de Dª Dionisia, fuerte y ruda, pero a la vez, sobria y austera, destacando ante un fondo neutro, ligeramente iluminado.</dc:description>

<rdaGr2:biographicalInformation xml:lang="es">Nació en una familia humilde con lo que se vio obligado desde muy joven a contribuir con diferentes ocupaciones al sostenimiento de la familia. Sólo había cursado el octavo año en la escuela cuando su madre murió de cólera en una de las pandemias que asoló España. Entre los diversos empleos que tuvo están el de platero, decorador de azulejos, y pintor de abanicos. Después de la muerte de su padre pasó a vivir con su abuelo y empezó a estudiar en 1864 en la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos (Valencia). Durante esta época se ganaba la vida como sombrerero. Comenzó su formación artística a los 21 años, consiguiendo su primer éxito tres años más tarde, en Barcelona. En 1871, por primera vez, presentó obras en la Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes. Estuvo dos veces en Roma, la primera gracias a la venta de un cuadro (1873), la segunda becado (de 1876 a 1881). Allí comienza sus grandes producciones de historia, alejadas de los convencionalismos del género. En esta primera parte de su carrera pinta cuadros de carácter academicista. A partir de 1874 comienza una línea pictórica más íntima e impresionista. Cuando regresó a su ciudad natal, abandonó los temas históricos y en su lugar comenzó a pintar temas familiares, desnudos, y escenas de la vida cotidiana. Se le considera precursor, en temas y estilo, de Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida y de Francisco Domingo tanto en el tema como en el estilo. De hecho, se dedicó sistemáticamente a llevar al lienzo o la tabla aquellas escenas de la vida cotidiana que observaba diariamente, como su obra Los Mayos (Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga). En esta obra los elementos realistas se funden con los simbolistas y una prioritaria obsesión por definir el espacio mediante el tratamiento del color y los juegos de luces y sombras.
