A group of decorative techniques involving the application of colored powders to lacquerware. Literally, "sprinkled picture", powdered gold, silver or colored pigment is applied while the lacquer is still damp. These techniques were very popular during the Heian period (794-1333) when they became the dominant method used for decorating Japanese lacquerware. They are often used in conjuction with "kirikane."
