Books recording lists of any of various types, including expenditures, financial administration, laws, or names and contact information; the term is derived from the books originally having been typically bound in simple black binding. Examples include ledgers relating to finance or administration; codes of rules, such as those relating to maritime law; the names of people liable to censure or punishment; and address books recording names and contact details.
